information. >> ifill: republican john mccain pressed clinton on why u.s. consular staff evacuated from libya to germany weren't questioned sooner. >> i categorically reject your answer to senator johnson about, well, we didn't ask these survivors, who were flown to ramstein the next day, that they-- that this was not a spontaneous demonstration. to say that it's because an investigation was going on-- the american people deserve to know answers, and they certainly don't deserve false answers. so here we are, four months later, and we still don't have the basic information. now, if you want to go out and tell the american people what happened, you should at least have interviewed the people who were there instead of saying, no, we couldn't talk to them because an f.b.i. investigation was going on. >> well, senator, i understand your very strong feelings. you knew chris. you were a friend of chris. you were one of the staunchest supporters of the efforts to dislodge qaddafi and try to give the libyan people a chance. and we just have a disagreement. we have a disagreement about what did happen

't strike john mccain when he admitted his own party had a problem. there seems to be some truth talking, some movement towards compromise. are you optimistic about this? >> well, first of all, i'm glad senator mccain said what he did because we don't want the republicans to get any credit for having a moral -- they're doing this because they can read election returns, and they've got to fwet this issue at least beyond them. they have to understand there's a price to pay. do they pay the price if they're obstructionist on 100% background check? do they pay the price if they're obstructionist on high capacity magazines in they have to make that decision. on the fiscal cliff themselves, do they pay the price if they don't do something that is commonsense and a workable approach to debt? energy. all these things. we like wee winding tape to 2007 and -- george w. bush is really -- that tape speaks for itself. gornl bush did in 2007 introduce immigration reform that went basically nowhere. he made personal calls to members of his own party to get it passed. only 12 of the 49 republican senato

including john kerry for secretary of state and chuck hagel for defense secretary. but with all of the choices, questions of will they sail through congress, peter? >> harris, this week president obama's nominees to be the next secretary of state john kerry was received well by democrats and republicans. >> i commend the nom to you without reservation. >> he will be a terrific bridge from the hill to administration. >> senator kerry's support in the senate is not expected to dwindle . so he's likely to be the next secretary of state. but hand capping the odds of the other nominees for important position is tricky like richard corda for the consumer of the financial bureau. >> after the senate refused to allow him a up or down vote i appointed him on my own. that expires in the end of this year and president obama renominated cordray this week . senators wrote letters opposing the nomination and the senator said this week. until key structural changes are made to the bureau to insure accountabiity or transparency i will continue my opposition to any nominee for director. john bre

introducing senator john kerry in his confirmation hearing and we'll tell you about that in just a bit. walter is in baltimore, maryland on our independent line. caller: happy new year, this is my first call of the year and i'm looking to being a continued participant p c-span. i enjoyed secretary clinton's responses to the questions that were thrown at her by the republican -- if i can, clowns, who seem to want to make this a travesty on the american people when it was not a travesty on the american people. it was an attack. and i do believe that she honestly and tried to defend our system of justice by not jumping out off the bridge with a bunch of foolishness. the terrorist attacks that occurred on september 11 of last year, couldn't have been anticipated by anybody. and we hope as we have taken the flags and ribbons off our cars following september 11, 2001, that we will respectfully try and come together and move on with justice for the world, not just for those four americans that died. but for the entire world. host: let's go to florida, and sharon on our republican line. caller: i was

serve. that's why we're here. ♪ >>> the president's nominee to run the state department, senator john kerry, faced questions before the senate foreign relations committee this week. during his opening remarks, he was interrupted by an anti-war protester, which triggered this personal reply. >> when i first came to washington to testify, i obviously was testifying as part of a group of people who came here to have their voices heard. and that is above all what this place is about. >> nearly 42 years ago, it was kerry who aimed to have his voice heard when he first appeared on capitol hill not as a politician but as a protester. the year, 1971. he was part of an anti-war group testifying before that very committee. but it was days before on this program where kerry gave the country its first look at a future leader. and it's this morning's "meet the press" moment. >> we are down here to demand that those who call themselves the most committed of all in this country, namely the senators and congressmen, who have been talking peace for the past few years, that these men exercise their res
